Vincent van Gogh had his first drawing classes when he was 13 years old. He went to school in Tilburg, while he lived in a boarding house at the St. Anneplein.

The high school was housed in the former town palace of Willem II in 1866. In Vincent's time this school had one of the best drawing teachers: Constant Cornelis Huijsmans. He worked according to traditional academic rules in which the drawing was central to the perception.
